Läs, det är rätt intressant :)

First, a question (perhaps rhetorical) . . .

When we see flashbacks, are we supposed to be seeing a glimpse of the 'true' reality of the past (inserted as a dramatic device by the writers), or are they actually a memory that the Lostaway is having at that moment, which we are 'eavesdropping' on? This is a subtle distinction, but I think it could help explain a lot of what we've seen.

My unexamined assumption had always been that we were seeing events as they really unfolded in the past . . . and it seems that that's the assumption underlying most discussions here. But in fact we might actually be seeing a memory that the person is having at that moment. I have seen that idea stated or implied in some discussions here . . . though it doesn't seem to be all that widespread.

Assuming that we're seeing memories could in fact explain a lot of the odd things that have been happening lately.

We all know that memories are not that reliable. If we're seeing Lostaway memories, then we could actually be seeing 'false' memories, 'implanted' memories, or simply flawed and jumbled memories. I personally tend towards the idea of false/implanted memories . . .

Consider . . . what if all of the passengers had been subjected to something BEFORE they got on the plane, and were 'brainwashed' to forget the event? Think of 'The Manchurian Candidate', (the old one with Frank Sinatra), and you might get the idea. This could explain a lot . . .

* Why do Hurley and Locke both have the same boss? Because the man we see in their flashback/memory is NOT their boss . . . they both met him during their 'sessions', and they've 'implanted' this person into their memories as a boss.

* Why were so many Lostaways involved with a gold-colored Pontiac? Because somehow this vehicle was integral to their 'sessions' . . . so it's taken the place of a significant car in their past.

* Why were the lawyer's offices so similar for Michael and Claire? Because they were both in this room in the 'sessions', and now it's become their vision of the office.

* Why does Hanso look like Locke's father? Because Locke met Hanso at the 'sessions', and has inserted him into his memories as a father figure (an evil father figure, at that).

* Why was the Dharma symbol seen on the computer in Sun's father's office? Because Jin saw it in his 'session', and inserted it into his memory of his overbearing father-in-law.

* How is it that Hurley won the lottery using 'the numbers'? Well, he didn't . . . he learned them in his 'session', and then simply 'remembered' them as being the winning lottery numbers.

* Did Michael really give Walt a stuffed polar bear? Again . . . maybe he 'inserted' it into the memory because it played a large part in Dharma.

This idea came to me when I saw Hurley's dream . . . with Kate's voice coming out of the mouth of the chicken man. The mind can cause information to 'bubble to the surface' in very odd ways . . .

If I may indulge myself in a very long post, you might even take this a little bit further, and assume that (at least some of) the memories each Lostaway is having were in part or in total 'implanted' during these sessions . . . this could further explain some things . . .

* Why can Locke suddenly walk on the island? Because his flashback memories of being in a wheelchair were false memories, implanted in 'the session'!

* How did Desmond happen to end up on the island after having met Jack in a chance encounter years ago? Because Jack never met him years ago . . . this meeting was another false one, implanted in 'the session'.

* Did Sawyer really meet Jack's father in Australia? Perhaps not . . . perhaps, the man we see isn't even Jack's real father!

So why were all the passengers 'brainwashed'? I'll leave that conjecture for another member!
