According to government documents recently obtained, the Internet will be shutting all servers down at 5:00EST on July 28th, 2004. This is being done as part of the current anti-piracy efforts of the DOJ and INTERPOL. It is currently not known if this will be a permenant situation. We will attempt to obtain a hard copy of this memo, but for now the text format that was accidentally leaked is all that is avaliable. Here is the memo, which makes the situation fairly clear despite some censoring of apparently classified information. It is unclear if we will be able to update you on this matter after the aforementioned date.

As per Memorandum 12990B, Current Action has been planned for a strategic reduction of Internet Piracy, *****, Terrorism, and Online Copyright Infringement.

The following protocols and ***** will be removed from all Internet servers, begining at 5:00 on July 28th, 2004:

FTP

IRC

***** **

HTTP

TCP/IP

TELNET

Foll owing removal of these protocols, there will be a general rerouting of all packets to the address of 127.0.0.1, resulting in a local loop that will effectivly remove all access to the Internet. DOJ, ***, and authorized Government servers will not be affected by this change(1). These protocols will be removed on the basis of current traffic so as to not cause undue disruption of Internet service. It is hoped that these actions will curb the pervasive trading of illegally duplicated intellectual property.
