How will the new NiP perform?
NiP haven’t participated in an offline event since cs_summit. They recently made a roster change where they added REZ to the squad and kicked friberg. It will be interesting to see what they have changed within the team, e.g positions and strats among other things. It will also be interesting to see how REZ will play under the pressure that comes with being a part of NiP and how he’ll perform at a big offline event. Another interesting thing is if their honeymoon period will help them to victory, like so many times before.

Can Space Soldiers prove themselves?
Space soldiers has been performing good online, but has never attended an event as big as ESL cologne. This is their chance to actually prove that they can perform as good offline as they do online and show the other tournament organizers that they deserve to be invited to more tournaments. Xantares and calyx have been the two top performing players for Space Soldiers, but now it’s time to show that they can perform at a big offline event as well.

Will SK win ESL Cologne for the second time in a row?
SK are one of the favorites coming into the event. They won the ESL pro league finals over FaZe (BO3) and Dreamhack Summer over fnatic (BO3), which speaks for them. They have bootcamped in Europe for approximately 2-3 weeks and will continue to do so until after the major. They are the current champions and are here to, not only win the tournament for the second time in a row, but also to show that they are the current number one team in the world coming into the major.

Can fnatic prove that they are a strong team to count on?
Fnatic has had a bit of a roller coaster if you look at their latest results in offline events. They managed to place second in Dreamhack Summer but got knocked out of the groups in the ESL pro league finals after losing to Cloud9 (BO1) and Team Liquid (BO3). They are a good team on paper, no question about it, but the question is how they’ll perform here at the event. Fnatic have to prove that they are strong coming into the major, but on the other hand they might save some strats for the major and therefore just see this tournament as a warm-up for the major.

Will Liquid take revenge for failing to qualify for the major?
Liquid failed to make it through to the major qualifier after losing the final match to Flipsid3 in overtime. This is something that Liquid can use to their advantage, they can take out their aggression over the F3 game on their opponents here at the event. They also got to the final of the last ESL cologne event, so they also have some revenge there. It’s not the same lineup as last time, but it feels like this lineup is better and can at the very least manage to go through to the playoff.

Can cloud9 continue the form
Cloud9 are one of the two American teams here at the event and will also be the only American team at the major after managing to qualify last weekend. Cloud9 have had some good performances the last events that they’ve participated in. They aren’t one of the favourites coming into the event, but they can upset and go through to the playoff. The big question is if they can continue the form that they’ve showed us at these past events that they’ve played in?

Will G2 be able to perform as they did in the major qualifier
G2 are one of the big favorites coming into the tournament. They recently managed to qualify for the major last weekend, where they looked very dominant. they are one of the scarier teams in the scene right now. There they managed to win over cloud9 and Immortals, who are both participating in this event, which speaks for the Frenchmen. The question is if they can perform against teams like SK and FaZe, who they lost to in the ESL pro league finals.

Will Heroic upset?
Heroic hasn’t participated in an offline event since Dreamhack tours where they got eliminated in the group stage after losing to Mousesports (BO1) and Misfits (BO3). They have to prove that they still are a top team who are able to go head to head with some of the other top teams. They’re entering the tournament as one of the underdogs, but should despite that not be underestimated.

Can Immortals prove that they’re a stable team?
Immortals has had some decent performances lately. They managed to qualify for the major, but it was a bumpy ride. After losing to G2 and BIG the Brazilians managed to pull themselves together and win over dignitas, godsent and finally Hellraisers. They earlier managed to reach the semifinal in Dreamhack Summer after beating Mousesports and SK pretty convincingly, but then lost to fnatic in a BO3.

Will mousesports finally be able to play in front of the german home crowd in the LANXESS arena?
Mousesports is the only German hope in this year's ESL one cologne event. They have had some really good results as of lately and managed to qualify to the major. The question is if they’ll save the tactics for the major of if they’ll use at least some of them to be able to play in front of the home crowd. Ropz and oskar both had some really good performances in the major qualifier, so it’ll be interesting to see if they can continue the same form in this event.

How will Na’Vi perform?
Na’Vi hasn’t played in an offline event since Adrenaline Cyber League where they lost the final vs Virtus.Pro with a score of 2-1 and before that they played the ESL pro league finals where they got knocked out of the groups after losing to optic, North and mousesports. They haven’t really played as convincing as you’d expect them to and they have to show us that they still are one of the top tier teams within the scene.

Will North's break pay off?
North hasn’t played an event since the ESL pro league finals where they lost the final to G2 (3-1). The Danes might therefore has one or two cards up their sleeves, but whether they’ll reveal them at cologne or at the major is the question. They aren’t seen as one of the favourites, but they are most certainly one of the stronger teams at the event and you can never really count them out. It’ll be interesting to see what they have practiced now ever since the ESL pro league.
