Fragbites Big Mouseskate-test

1
A few weeks a test of nine gamingmouspads was presented here at Fragbite, and while we were at it we also reviewd five of the most common mouseskates, The way we did the test, where multiple persons gave their point of view was very popular, but some people though that some skates-brands were missing. Therfore we give you the sequal, Fragbites Big Mouseskate-test.
The test consists of skates from the following brands:
If you think that some brand still is missing, you are welcome to contact plastninja on IRC to get them tested.

The persons who this time got the undoubtful pleasure of testing and reviewing products are:
  • Jonas ”Mitsukai” Nilsson
  • Christoffer ”pooo” Strömberg
  • Christian ”EkEn” Ek
  • Robin ”BxTr” Svensson
  • Magnus ”AuR” Rosvall
  • Kristoffer ”atom” Gustavsson
  • Olle ”plastninja” Eliasson

The test was conducted during one day, a day full of laugh and joy and an extremely nice, christmassy-mood. All the testers were asked to bring their mouse, which in five cases out of six were a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0, something that might speak for a slight Micosoft-dominanse of the mouse-market?

We attached one skate-brand on each mouse and then we let the mice go around between the testers, offering them a chance to put grades and comment the glide and control on three different surfaces. The surfaces we tested the skates on are the most commonly used pads today and the ones we thought differed most from each other, the Q-Pad XXXL, fUnc sUrface 1030 and IceMat.

The given grades were added up to one, resulting in three average-grades per skate, one for each surface. We also calculated a average of the averages, a total-grade so to say. These total-grades were introduced to our mouseskate-table.

Before we move on to the test itself I would like to thank the following persons/organisations:
  • Fragbite crew
  • #psyket.nu
  • Mitsukai
  • Hyperglide
  • MaxFPS.se
  • Superskatez
  • Multipads

Anyways, enjoy!

Hyperglide

Hyperglide is not your a ordinary mousetape, but little mousefeet attached upon the old ones. A very practical solution, so you get

away from all the struggeling with measuring and cutting into right size.

Hyperglide are very thick and are incredible when it comes to durability. A single pair will last for months.

Q-pad XXXL:

”Nice and even glide, feels very smooth.” “Hyperglide works very nice with the Q-Pad, soft and easycontroled glide!” ”Heaven is a place on earth, or at least is this tape together with Q-pad heavenly. Very low friction, but still not too low” "A pure ten, nothing to complain about!".

Score: 9/10

IceMat:

”This is alot worse than on the Q-pad.” ”These skates work best with cloth, apperantly.” ”Makes alot of sound, and it feels as if you’re scratching the pad” ”Lucky I got headphones, wouldn’t have heard anything otherwise.” "The glide is OK." ”A nasty sound that makes it pretty unplayable.”

Score: 6/10

fUnc:

"These skates are really weird, it works best on rough surfaces, when others work best on smooth ones." "Too good glide, uncontrolable on the rough side” ”OK on the rough side, pretty useless on the smooth." "Works OK."

”Just OK!

Score: 7/10

Attachment:

"Piece a cake, you don’t even need scissors!” ”Nice design, easy to attach." "This is how it’s supposed to be! Just good glide without alot of work!"

MaxFPS Skates

MaxFPS Skates looks just like ordinary plastic tape. They are delivered in a small bag containing two strips, each about 10 x 3

centimeter. These skates are somewhere in between on the thickness-grade.

Q-pad XXXL:

”Really bad glide, I don’t like them at all.” ”Nothing bad about the glide, it’s the control that is the problem. In some way you loose the contact with the pad.” ”Even glide, just like with all skates on this fantastic pad.” ”Strange glide and strange handling.” ”I want these! I need these!”

Score: 6/10

IceMat:

“Pretty nice glide, the big advantage is the low noise-level.” ”Wow, it feels like a completely different pad!” ”Makes the whole mousemovement smoother.” ”It’s good that they are as silent as they are, although sometimes it feels like you’re scratching the pad.” ”Sooooooft and nice!”

”Very good on hard surfaces.” ”Feel a little bit weird”

Score: 7/10

fUnc:

“NICE! At least on the smooth side, on the rough it’s not even half as good. Bad handling too” ”A bit too noisey, eh?” ”Too low friction on the smooth side, a bit difficult to control. Not very good on the rough side either.” ”I’d give it an eight on the smooth side, but a five on the rough.” ”Very very bad on the rough side.”

Score: 7/10

Attachment:

“Standard-Attachment. Nothing exceptional to think about, just try to get the pieces as similar to the mousefeet as possible.” ”The tape came off the backside very easily, that’s a big advantage!”

”Stuck to the feet instantly.”

Score: 7/10

Price: 45 kr

Retailer: MaxFPS.se

Total Score: 7/10

Superskatez

Superskatez look like some kind of plastertape,

just like many other mouseskates. The " plaster" is coated with teflon, and just like MaxFPS it ends up somewhere in the middle of the thickness-scale.

Q-pad XXXL:

“Nice glide, although a bit uneven” ”Nice glide, not as good handling” ”The glide is a little bit too good, a bit hard to control.” "I’d give it a five or something, I don’t like the uneven glide, makes it feel very random." "It won’t ”flow” on the pad, feels like playing with 30 fps."

Score: 7/10

IceMat:

“Not quite as good as on cloth, but it works.” ” Not any exceptional glide here, not to mention the deafening scratch-sounds…” ”Acceptable glide but not as nice as on the Q-Pad, the friction is slightly higher, something that affects the allover feeling pretty much.”

Score: 6/10

fUnc:

“Quite OK!.” “Just as on the Q-pad the glide is a bit too good, which makes the mouse hard to control.” "Uneven friction on this pad too, although not as bad as on the Q-Pad, feels like 50 fps."

Score: 7/10

Attachment:

“There was some work to do, but no bigger problems getting them attached to the mouse. Once there, they remained there.” "The result is greatly improved if you really make an effort to get exact pieces.

MultiPads Black Skatez

Here's something exciting. Can black tape blow life into your old rugged fUnc? Well, actually it can, if you are to believe MultiPads. The tape is sold by meters, but they're definetly not wide. The tape is kinda thick, but not as ordinary tape.

Q-pad XXXL:

"Works pretty well, but a little to much tape to work on cloth." "The glide is okay, but the control was really good." "Extremely well, glides as a dream." "Feels extraordinary good, kinda tight with the pad." "Great handle, great glide, great control. Perfect!"

Score: 8/10

IceMat:

"Better on hard surface than soft." "The tape that, according to me, works extremely well on IceMat. Great friction and control." "If i was talking about handle on the previous pad, i can contintue. Feels like you would need some winter-tires here...."

Score: 7/10

fUnc:

"Not bad at all, actually." "Works very well, glides extremely well, but the control is not just as good as on the Q-pad." "Well, it moves too fast, and has too less handle."

Score: 6/10

Attachment:

"No problems at all. Althought here’s always an extra moment when working with scissors."

MultiPads Secondary

To all of you who know what Teflon Regular, Superskatez and IceMat Padgliders look like the MultiPads Secondary will not be a surprise. The tape looks like the others, but the greatest difference is that it is a bit thicker, 0.25 millimetre actually.

Just like the "brothers" that I mentioned above, it looks like plaster, with a clear textile fabric as a base.

Q-pad XXXL:

"Not really my taste, bad control." "Hard to attach and it made the right corner scratch the surface. The glide was okay otherwise." "It glides real nice, and you've got good contact with the mousepad all the time." "Really great control, sticks to the mouse without any problem."

Score: 8/10

IceMat:

"It felt better here than on the fabric, good control." "Ugh! Something I'd never be able to play with, because of the sound. Worst this far." "Very good glide, not to say great. Makes too much noise."

Score: 8/10

fUnc:

"Feels about the same as on the IceMat. In other words, good control and okay glide." "Feels exactly as on the IceMat, but worse glide and less noise." "This feels like driving a car way too fast on a way too bad road." "Not bad, but a little slippery."

Score: 5/10

Application:

"It seemed as if they didn't want to stick to the edges so the small corner scratched the surface a little." "Left some glue when you removed them."

MultiPads Special Skatez

MultiPads Special are thin and blue. Very thin and very blue, kinda like the CT-colour in our favouritegame.

Well, actually the tape isn't blue at all, it's the backside that is. This backside is actually nice, but you

get angry at the tape after using it a while, it's almost impossible to release it once you've sticked it on. The tape is delivered in a long slice of about a meter, but not wider than 2-3 centimeters.

Q-pad XXXL:

"Bad control." "Ok friction, but less good control." "Works on the Q-pad, just as everything else." "Worked kinda good on the Q-pad, glides good but no good control at all."

Score: 5/10

IceMat:

"A little bit too high friction and high volume of scratch, lucky for us that we're wearing headsets." "It's ok, but not better than that." "Not much to put in the christmas tree, or actually yes, they're blue and shiny." "Not good stuff, too much glide with less control."

Score: 5/10

fUnc:

"Approved glide and control, the mouse gets where you take it to." "Relative good glide anyways." "Got worn out really fast." "Very pleasant on fUnc actually, great glide and the control was okay also."

Score: 7/10

Attachment:

"It won't work!" "Now i give up, 40 minutes to no good." ""#¤%&tape!" "YEAH! Got one on now!" "Impossible." "Must be something wrong with these..." "Exremely difficult, don't waste a life away with attaching these skatez, it's a task of a lifetime."

Conclusion

When things have settled in the house after the departure of all the wild mouseskatestesters it’s time for some reflection and a short summary to get a good overview of the test.

To begin with we can establish the fact that the pad generating the highest scores was the Q-Pad XXXL, but then again it also won our previous mousepad-test.

The "tape" I thought of as most interesting before the test, Hyperglid, proved to be pretty special, both when gliding better on rougher surfaces than on smoother ones but also when it came to attachment. Hyperglide was by far the skate that was easiest to attach to the mouse, no scissors or knives needed, as they are pre-cut to suit the mouse-feet.

Clearly most difficult to attach was the MultiPads Special, I have never heard so many curses from so many people directed towards onepiece of tape at a time.
