YellOwStaR: "I knew we were going to perform after the very first days we practiced together"

Initially going into the season, fans were very hesitant of the new line-up you and fnatic had built up. With so much on the line, was there ever a second of doubt within you about the team you had assembled?

To be honest, going into the season with a whole new team and only 2 weeks of practice right before LCS starts was worrying. But when we started our team practice, I realized that we actually had a shot and could surprise a lot of people as everyone wants to prove himself and are really eager to perform since they are new on the scene and are starting their career.

Both you and SK Gaming held a comfortable lead against the opposition during most of the season, going as far as you even tieing for 1st in the sixth week of the league. In contrast though, SK Gaming managed to have consistent 2-0 performances, whilst you often split your weekly games. What is it about SK and their ability to stay consistent that you felt you couldn’t mimic throughout majority of the split?

Well, as I mentioned before, we are a really new team - lots of people would say we are a one-dimensional team. In fact we just need more time and we were planning things wrong. For example, we'd prepare more before a match against more highly rated teams and neglect putting the same amount of work into our second match, which meant we often split series for every week. We just live and learn - losing make us realize what we are doing wrong and fixing stuff make us improve.

The topic of you being able to recruit and train up new blood has definitely become more pervasive following the recruitment of Steelback. Can you explain if there’s a genuine dymanic between you and him, and if you “trained him up” to become the player he is today?

Steeelback has had a short experience in the Challenger scene and he was mainly was a soloQ player before he joined us. Playing in a team is a whole different thing - I'd say it is even an entirely different game. In fact I was not really happy about the way we were playing and our coach put so much work to make him improve, I was giving him advice, sure, but the credit is mostly due to Luis who made him realize his major mistakes and what he could do better. I worked maily a lot on the communication to have better synergy so we both fulfilled our mission.

The team that surprised the most during the EU split has got to be H2k, who currently tied you for second place. A major change within the team could be seen when Raymond “kaSing” Tsang joined them. Having played them when they had both Voidle, and later kaSing, what’s the main difference between those different versions of the team?

We have only played them 2 games, one with Voidle and one with Kasing, but from what we saw in the games it is clear that KaSing brought much more to the team compared to Voidle. Maybe it's the shotcalling or the fresh blood means more motivation or maybe he just has a personality that fits the team better. Whatever it was it was clearly a big improvement for the team.

Overall, has the split exceeded your own expectations and hopes in regards to perfoming with the new roster?

I knew we were going to perform after the very first days we practiced together. But on paper, before we met I was not sure even though the management and I tried our best to build up a solid team.

With your playoff spot secured, how do you see your chances of winning the split and qualifying for Worlds?

We are going to focus on the playoffs and do our best because Fnatic already holds 3 EU LCS titles and I feel like we should have had 4 already. We have to keep working towards our goal step by step, and see how far we can go!
